
FÁS, the Training & Employment Authority, was established in 1988, under the Labour Services Act, 1987. Its functions include the operation of training and employment programmes; the provision of an employment / recruitment service; an advisory and support service for business; and support for co-operative and community-based enterprise.
The Board of FÁS has responsibility for the overall direction of the organisation and its policies, and reports to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Its members, who are appointed by the Minister, comprise a Chairman, representatives from employer, trade union, education, social welfare and youth interests, a representative of the Minister for Finance, two representatives of the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and two FÁS employee members.
Ian HYLAND Ian Hyland is a manager in the Services to Business Division of FÁS, the Irish National Training and Employment Authority. He works with a number of services sectors of business, with particular responsibility for transport and logistics. His role includes the identification of sectoral training needs and the commissioning of new training initiatives to meet these needs, working closely with the relevant industry representative bodies. He has recently been involved, along with the Irish Road Haulage Association and the Chartered Institute of Transport in Ireland, in planning and implementing a range of training programmes on management issues for owner/managers of road transport sme's. e-mail: ian.hyland@fas.ie | ![]() |
