Social Economic Research Rotterdam B.V.

Social Economic Research Rotterdam B.V. (SEOR) is an independent organisation associated to Erasmus University Rotterdam. SEOR is active in policy related economic research and advisory services for public and private sector clients, both national as international. SEOR aims at creating insight into social phenomena and contributing to solutions for policy issues. SEOR strives for practical results through scientific and objective methods.

Legal status

SEOR B.V. was originally established in 1987 by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) as Stichting Economisch Onderzoek Rotterdam / Foundation for Economic Research Rotterdam. As of 1997 SEOR B.V. has been privatised and is henceforth called Social Economic Research Rotterdam B.V.. SEOR is a limited liability company and a subsidiary of the EUR Holding B.V.

Staff

SEOR employs currently some 25 people. Furthermore, SEORs affiliation with Erasmus University Rotterdam enables it to draw on the academic and professional resources of the staff of the EUR. The Faculty of Economics of EUR is the largest faculty of economics in The Netherlands. The combination of research and education at Erasmus University Rotterdam guarantees an up-to-date knowledge of the latest theoretical developments. In the last few years some 30 people from the EUR have participated in SEOR projects.

In recent years, SEORs activities focussed on Labour Market, Social Security and Education issues have been intensified by contracting several renowned experts in these fields.

Activities

SEOR carries out research and advisory services in the following areas of expertise: "Macro- and Sector Analysis", "Labour and Labour Market", "Social Security and Social Protection", "Education and Training" and "Programme and Project Evaluation". The approach of SEOR aims at contributing to practical solutions of policy issues through independent and academic research and advisory services.

SEOR operates both national as international. SEOR has executed projects in a large number of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin-America and since 1990 in Eastern Europe, the Russian Federation and other states of the former Soviet-Union. SEOR undertakes projects for a wide variety of clients, such as ministerial departments of several countries, the European Commission, the World Bank, the Asian, African and Inter-American Development Bank, specialised agencies of the United Nations, etc.

Arie GELDERBLOM

Arie Gelderblom is a senior staff member of SEOR. His background is in economics. He is a specialist in labour market theory, the economics of training and education, the position of older workers and the effects of technological developments on the labour market.

Relevant studies include:
  • Costs and benefits of education and training
  • Evaluation of national and European employment and training measures
  • The (policies to improve) position of older workers in the labour-market
Through recent work for - among others - the European Commission, he has gained an insight into the education and training systems in the different EU-countries. Examples are studies on:
  • The country report for the OECD on "monitoring and financing lifelong learning"
  • Training in the road transport sector (in the framework of the force-programme and the leonardo-program)
  • Training in the textiles and clothing sector
  • Volume and bottlenecks of company training in three ec-countries
  • The role of apprenticeship in enhancing employability and job creation
  • Incentives for participation in vocational education and training in the Netherlands, France, UK, Malaysia and South Korea
For part of his time Arie Gelderblom is detached to the Foundation for Labour Market Policy. This Institute is specialised in research and advice concerning the effects of technological developments (Information and Communication Technology, ICT) on the labour market and training. This includes studies on:
  • The effects of the Internet on the labour market
  • The use of ICT as a training tool
  • Cost and benefits of ICT in company training
  • The effects of ICT on the position of older workers
